Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi’s visit to Rome this week has not been without controversy. The Libyan leader recruited hundreds of hostesses from a local modelling agency to attend a lecture where he encouraged them to convert to Islam. But Gaddafi’s proselytizing – free copies of the Koran were handed out – was not the real reason behind his trip.

The second half of August is shaping up to be one of the slowest in Fast Lane's history. I know this will sound unbelievable but I'm coming to the end of an uninterrupted two-week stretch that's been free of air travel, rail journeys, passport stamping and hotel stays, and while I'm looking forward to a trip, to Paris and Helsinki for Mom's birthday and getting back to Beirut for a blast of sea and sun, I've enjoyed being grounded in central London.
