Ischinger began his diplomatic career on the staff of the secretary general of the United Nations in New York before joining Germany's Foreign Service. He has held the post of Germany's ambassador to London (2006 to 2008) and the German ambassador to the US (2001 to 2006) and deputy foreign minister (1998 to 2001) in Berlin. Ambassador Ischinger is the chairman of the Munich Security Conference and global head of government relations, Allianz SE, Munich.
