After graduating from Oxford University in 1980, Lindley-French spent several years working for the British government and undertaking project management for the United Nations in Geneva and New York, as well as for the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne. He was formally a lecturer at the Department of War Studies, King's College London, deputy director of the International Centre for Security Analysis and senior research fellow at the EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris. He has also acted as a consultant to NATO in Brussels. He is a member of the Atlantic Council's Strategic Advisors Group.
