Mayor, city of Rio de JaneiroLaw graduate Paes first entered politics as the sub-prefect for the Barra de Tijuca district of Rio de Janeiro. He was elected to the city council in 1996 and to Congress in 1998. He was appointed municipal secretary for environmental management in 2000 before being re-elected to Congress in 2002. In 2006 he became secretary for sports and tourism for the State of Rio de Janiero and went on to defeat Fernando Gabeira in the 2008 mayoral elections.
