Daunt gave up a life of banking for the more refined settings of his bookshop, launched in Marylebone in the early 1990s. There are now five Daunt bookshops across London, representing the best in independent bookselling and with an air of retailing individuality. In May 2011 it was announced that Daunt had been appointed as the new managing director or Waterstones, the UK's largest bookstore chain.
