Rubell studied Fine Arts at Harvard University before attending the Culinary Institute of America. She wrote about food for over a decade before beginning her artistic practice. Rubell’s artwork is a hybrid of performance art, installation, and “happenings”, often involving food and drink as media and inviting the viewer to participate in the artwork.
