Jimmy Lai was born to an impoverished family on mainland China. At age 12 he escaped to Hong Kong where he worked in a factory, but he later found his fortune by setting up and then selling the clothing chain Giordano. The Tiananmen Square massacre inspired him to create his media network Next Media, now one of the world's biggest Chinese-language media groups. He is a leading critic of China's government.
