Carlhed joined the Swedish Institute, which promotes brand Sweden abroad, in 1998. He has been the head of its analysis and coordination department for over four years. A member of the Advisory Board of the Association for Place Branding and Public Diplomacy, Carlhed also sits on the board of Civil Rights Defenders, an organisation promoting human rights.
