The Winter Series

For the New Year’s Day edition of the Monocle Winter Series, Tyler Brûlé and the team welcome award-winning BBC news broadcaster Lyse-Doucet to the studio. She shares her experiences of reporting from Afghanistan, paints a vivid picture of the media landscape there and points to future hopes for peace in the country. Also around the table is Lady Elena Foster who reveals why she has chosen the sleepy streets of Geneva as the location for her new bookshop as well as her exciting projects and collaborations lined up for 2010. Meanwhile, Japanese pop sensations M-Flo make their European debut playing five live tracks to start the New Year with a bang.

Tokyo-based M-Flo consist of MC Verbal and DJ Taku. The group, initially formed in 1997, frequently collaborate with other vocalists, such as Japanese pop stars Lisa, a former member of the group, Emi Hinouchi and Ryohei. They have released five albums in their career—all of which have reached the top 10 in the Japanese charts. Selling out stadiums at home, M-Flo performed in Europe for the first time at a recent Monocle subscriber event in London.
