17 November 2012

This weekend enjoy art in Osaka, photography in Paris and check out the new album from Brooklyn band The Babies.

1. PHOTOGRAPHY: PARIS

— Paris Photo

This weekend the Grand Palais des Beaux-Arts will be the home of all things photographic. Since 1996 Paris Photo has offered a platform for artists, curators, galleries and aficionados to discuss, enjoy and snap-up each others’ work. As well as 151 exhibits and more than 1,000 contributors, visitors can also look forward to the Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. But if you’re not visiting the 8th arrondissement this weekend then look out for the inaugural Photo Los Angeles exhibition in late April 2013.

Grand Palais, Avenue Winston Churchill. Open 12.00 to 20.00. Until 18 November

2. EXHIBITION: OSAKA

— Shihoko Fukumoto, Natural Folk Textiles, From Material to Concept

The past week saw the opening of an exhibition of the work of Japanese artist Shihoko Fukumoto at the Artcourt gallery in Osaka. Through the craft of shibori (wringing fabrics) and bokashi (the blending of colours) Fukumoto creates her art on woven hemp and cotton canvasses. Fukumoto’s use of ai, a Japanese indigo dye, adds cultural significance to a modern use of traditional craft and design.

Tenmabashi 1-8-5, Kita-ku. Open 11.00 to 19.00 Monday to Friday, 11.00 to 17.00 Saturdays, closed Sunday and Monday. Until 24 November

3. RETAIL: LONDON

— 8 Ties by Miguel Chevalier for Hermès

Hermès latest collaboration is with Mexican-born Paris-based digital artist Miguel Chevalier and nestled in its menswear boutique at Selfridges’ Wonder Room. Chevalier uses designs based around the USB symbol, the On/Off sign and the cable jack to redefine Hermés’ silk ties. Chevalier has also created an interactive art installation around the display that reflects the bold, arresting computer-inspired designs that have been his trademark since 1978.

Selfridges , 400 Oxford Street. Open 9.30-21.00, Monday to Saturday, 11.30-18.00, Sunday. Until 2 December

4. EXHIBITION: TORONTO

— Uncharted Waters: Toronto’s Enigmatic Harbour

Brave the winter cold and take a stroll along Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre boardwalk this weekend to check out Uncharted Waters – an outdoor photo exhibit exploring the city’s harbour. Seventy-two large-scale images are on display until June 2013. Six photographers – Dianne Davis, Johan Hallberg-Campbell, Jesse Louttit, Eamon Mac Mahon, Joanne Ratajczak and Clare Samuel – explore the harbour’s commercial significance, working environments and natural beauty.

235 Queens Quay West. Toronto. Until 30 June 2013

5. MUSIC: GLOBAL

— The Babies: Our House On The Hill

Brooklyn’s alternative folk-rockers The Babies started out as the side projects of Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls) and Kevin Morby (Woods) but anyone who caught the band early would’ve had the feeling this winning partnership would last. Now back with their second album Our House On The Hill, the band continue the retro, no-nonsense acoustic-tinged guitar pop of their debut, building on a surly, fatalistic delivery that sounds like they’re making music for nobody but themselves. Hopefully, they’ll never grow up.
