Five things to do on New Year's— Global

Preface

From Aspen to Istanbul, check out five great destinations and events for seeing in the New Year.

Aspen, Berlin, Istanbul, New Year, New York, Ukraine

30 December 2012

NYE: ASPEN

—Hotel Jerome

Dating back to 1889, the Hotel Jerome has long held a place as one of Aspen’s favourite luxury hotels but this season marks a new lease of life for the historic lodge. Following a four-month renovation, the Jerome has re-opened after a top-to-bottom refit by one of the industry’s most celebrated designers – Todd-Avery Lenahan – meaning ever more comfortable rooms and a bold new look for the hotel’s renowned J-Bar and restaurant. While the new look is far more modern than its turn-of-the-century roots, the new decor honours the old bones of one of Aspen’s finest hotels. There’s a new spa for the perfect fix after a long day on the slopes and a long night bringing in the new year, and Prospect, the hotel’s restaurant has just welcomed a talented new chef.

—The House Hotel

Escape the chaotic streets of Istanbul and celebrate New Year’s Eve in The House Hotel overlooking the Bosphorus. Located in the vibrant Ortakoy district with the best view possible of the firework display on the Bosphorus bridge. The House Hotel also has another venue in the chic Nisantasi neighbourhood well worth stopping by, where they will be serving mulled wine in its pop-up bar on the bustling Abdi Ipekci Street. If you’re in Instanbul this New Year’s Eve, keeping things in-house is the way to go.

NYE: BERLIN

—Silvester In Berlin

Last year over one million visitors welcomed the new year on Berlin’s Straße des 17 Juni covering the stretch between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Column. The main stage located on the square of Platz des 18 März will hold an eight-hour show hosting an array of musicians and performances such as Belgian singer Kate Ryan and British electronic dance duo the Pet Shop Boys. Don’t miss the firework display that will light up the Brandenburg Gate on the 2km-stretch that’s iconic as one of Europe’s most famous streets and lively neighbourhoods.

—11 Mirrors Design Hotel

Located just a few metres from the National Opera House, 11 Mirrors is one of the only boutique hotels in the bustling Ukrainian capital. Contrary to its 19th-century inspired architecture, the 49-room hotel’s interior is accessorised for your comfort and provides all the modern touches needed to prepare for a wonderful evening seeing in the new year. Kiev nightlife is famous as a cultural hub of Eastern Europe but we think there’s more on offer than countless Horilka shots. While you’re there don’t forget to nibble on some kutya – a special Christmas pudding made form honey, nuts and plums.

NYE: NEW YORK

—Matthew Dear at Le Bain

The venue on top of The Standard Hotel, which itself looks out onto New York’s audacious and award-winning High Line Park, is not holding back on talent this New Year’s Eve. Detroit avant-garde house music rule-bender and producer (and Ghostly International record label co-founder) Matthew Dear will be taking to the DJ booth to see in the new year and he will be joined by Superpitcher (known to his friends as Aksel Schaufler), the German DJ and producer who has long been a part of Cologne’s highly-respected Kompakt Records. No doubt the view of New York from the top building will be beautiful as 2013 slowly joins the party, better late than never.

848 Washington Street. Tickets for Matthew Dear on New Years’ Eve are available from the official website.
