Different cultures have very different notions of what constitutes a good first impression. Americans generally agree that a big white smile, a firm handshake and a loud, humdinger of a hello makes unforgettable impact, while the Japanese will bow, wait for someone else to introduce them and tender a business card before they even open their mouths. Similar cultural axioms apply to the hotel industry and, unfortunately, the majority of properties get the subtleties altogether wrong.
