Buenos Aires

Pack plenty of energy for Buenos Aires. It is big, beautiful and buzzing. The city revels in its vibrant nightlife, but as UNESCO's first City of Design, it also offers lots to do by day with a multitude of parks, cafés and ice-cream joints for chilling out.The credit crisis has reached the city but porteños just shrug and say they've seen it all before. Be patient with the chaotic transport, regular strikes and demonstrations.

Essentials

01 Everyone and everything is always behind schedule.
02 Buenos Aires is a sporty town. Pack for a run in the parks or a yoga class, or try biketours.com.ar
03 Even male friends greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
04 Endear yourself to shopkeepers by paying with small change: coins are like gold dust.
05 You can dress up to the nines or down in trainers and jeans, but do avoid the terrible 1980s haircuts enjoying a revival here.

Transport
Buy a Guia "T" street map
It costs 3-4 pesos/€1 in a kiosk and a Subtepass multi-trip card for the metro (70 centavos a trip).

The subway (subte.com.ar) is much simpler than the bus system and faster than a taxi for most journeys.
