Buenos Aires

There are two Buenos Aires: one is the traditional, with the tango nights and classical concerts at The Teatro Colón. Another, more fun and exciting, is the one that is home to some of the best and trendiest restaurants, bars and stores. And most interesting is that since the economic crisis that brought down Argentina in the late 20th century, Buenos Aires just gets better and better. New places to eat, shop and dance emerge every moment, as if they were the best excuse for porteños (as Buenos Aires’ inhabitants are called) to forget the problems the country still faces.

Essentials

01 Nobody dines before 22.00. And the nightlife never starts before 02.00.
02 The chicest shops are in Palermo. But most of them have an outlet branch in Aguirre street. Look out for the sales.
03 Taxis are cheap but their drivers will try to charge as much as they can. Research the route beforehand and stick to it.
04 Even male friends greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
05 Buenos Aires was appointed this year as World Book Capital by Unesco. Before landing in the city, do a little research on Borges and Cortazar’s books. They are essential for any pub talk.

Buy a Guia “T” street map. It costs 3 to 4 pesos (€ 0.6 cents) and a Subtepass multi-trip card for the metro (0.70 pesos a trip). The subway (subte.com.ar) is much simpler than the bus system and faster than a taxi for most journeys. And there are free wi-fi spots in most of the metro lines.
