New York

It’s the city that never sleeps, but there’s enough variety in New York to please even those after a simple urban retreat. With developments such as the Highline and the Hudson River Park offering more landscaped green space than ever, you can take a break between restaurant-hopping and museum visits and sit back and take in one the world’s most impressive skylines.

Essentials

01 None of New York’s three airports are efficient or user-friendly, but JFK is the worst. Avoid the long immigration lines and the cab queues and pick Newark. There’s a rail link into Manhattan’s Penn Station.
02 Contrary to popular belief, New Yorkers are generally friendly.
03 Rent a car. Within a couple of hours you can be on a beach in the Hamptons or hiking in the scenic Hudson Valley.
04 Jog or cycle up the newly landscape parks on the Westside along the Hudson or on the eastern edge up the East River.
05 Weekend brunch is one of New York’s best traditions, but turn up for a table before noon.
06 Take the subway if you need to get anywhere between 16.00 and 17.00 (when the taxi drivers change shifts).
07 The Upper East Side is the place to view women who have overdone the plastic surgery. You'll think you've landed on another planet.
08 Remember you'll never need to cross a bridge or tunnel when going out in the evening.
09 Make reservations.
10 Do as the locals. Steal someone's cab and then flip them the finger when they scream at you.
