1 October 2011

Something for your weekend: Monocle’s global selection includes farmhouse cuisine in New York, a pop-up cinema in London, and an engaging design fair in Vienna.

1 FOOD: NEW YORK

—Mas (la grillade)

This Saturday marks the opening of what is sure to become one of downtown Manhattan’s most lauded restaurants. Located in the West Village, Mas (la grillade) expands upon the rustic Provençal theme of Galen Zamarra’s first restaurant with a focus on wood-fired grilling. Miles away from prevailing haute cuisine notions of food as theatre, Zamarra’s fare aims to celebrate the natural elements of simple foods prepared under the most rudimentary conditions. The menu will feature a variety of meats butchered in-house, as well as a bounty of fresh seafood and vegetables. With autumn on its way, the intimate, farmhouse-inspired interior will provide just the right setting for a tasteful meal in the city.

28 Seventh Avenue South, New York. Open daily. For reservations call 212-255-1795

2 EXHIBITION: MURCIA

—Maureen Gallace

Maureen Gallace’s latest exhibition at La Conservera in Murcia makes a welcome departure from the artist’s normal UK-US circuit. At this show, some of Gallace’s gently iconic American landscapes are exhibited in addition to depictions of local Spanish scenes – the first non-American subject matter from the artist. These small paintings are eminently digestible and are as serene as they are naturalistic. Gallace’s work does however go further to encapsulate a modernist, almost melancholy disposition.

Avenida de Lorqui, 30562 Ceutí. Open Tuesday – Friday 18.00 – 22.00, Saturday – Sunday 12.00-21.00. Closed Monday. Until 8 January 2012laconservera.org

3 FILM: LONDON

—Portobello Pop-Up

The Portobello Pop-Up digital cinema kicks off this weekend with free screenings underneath the Westway flyover on Portobello Road. Our pick is 1985’s My Beautiful Launderette, starring Daniel Day Lewis. Hanif Kureishi’s Oscar-nominated screenplay about race, sexuality and politics during the Thatcher years may be over 25 years old, but it offers a fresh perspective on the London of today. A Q&A with director Stephen Frears follows the film.

My Beautiful Launderette is showing at 19.30, 2 October. Portobello Pop-Up, 3 Acklam Road, London. Portobello Pop-Up runs until 8 Octoberportobellopopup.com

4 DESIGN: VIENNA

—Vienna Design Week

One of the world’s more charming and accessible design fairs opens this weekend in Vienna. Pick up a map and follow the Passionswege route, where you can visit heritage craft and design workshops such as Lobmeyr glass and Mühlbauer hats, which have teamed up with young designers for one-off collaborations especially for the festival.

At various locations throughout Vienna. Until 9 October

5 EXHIBITION: TOKYO

—Irving Penn and Issey Miyake: Visual Dialogue

When Issey Miyake’s origami-like clothes appeared in Vogue in 1983, the Japanese fashion designer was so impressed with the images that he tracked down the photographer and asked to work with him. The photographer was Irving Penn, and in 1987 Miyake began regularly shipping his Paris collections to New York for Penn to shoot. Their 13-year collaboration is the focus of a retrospective at 21_21 Design Sight in Tokyo, which features 150 of Penn’s images as well as drawings and posters.

21_21 Design Sight, Tokyo Midtown Garden, 9-7-6 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo
Open daily 11.00 – 20.00, closed Tuesday. Until 8 April 2012
