10 September 2011

Something for your weekend: Monocle’s global selection includes a fashion-week pit-stop in New York, an intriguing German artist in London, and a film festival in Toronto.

  1. The Melbourne photographer plays on commonly shared cultural memories of suburbia. Kozka puts each image of otherwise ordinary scenes of everyday life through a lens hyper-stylised in light and colour – inviting closer scrutiny of what we otherwise might not notice, in a way that’s both disorientating and pensive.

Australian Centre for Photography, 257 Oxford Street, Sydney. Open Tuesday to Friday 12.00 – 19.00, Saturday and Sunday 10.00 – 18.00. Until 8 October

  1. Aesop’s first standalone store in New York is officially open for business. The Australian skincare gurus caused a stir in May with the launch of its kiosk in Grand Central Station made entirely out of back issues of the New York Times. Aesop Nolita is continuing with the NYC theme, using old copies of the Times as building material, and screening Criterion films.

  1. German artist Christof Mascher has, until now, referenced the historical traditions of Northern European landscape painting. The artist’s improbable mountains and curious grotesques that have become signatures are now translated into the shape of Wunderkammer, or cabinets of curiosities in his latest show. Intriguing, and suspended between historic and contemporary art, this young artist’s work calls for thoughtful observation.

Josh Lilley Gallery, 44-46 Riding House Street, London. Open Tuesday to Saturday 11.00-18.00. Until 8 October.

  1. Model, philanthropist and now restaurateur Elettra Wiedemann has collaborated with Michelin-starred chef Ed Brown to launch pop-up restaurant Goodness. Open for fashion week, Goodness offers simple and healthy food in quiet and calm surroundings just across from fashion week hub, the Lincoln Center. A host of up-and-coming chefs from New York are pitching in, rounding out the menu with items such as duck confit salad, and pan-seared bream mash with truffle vinaigrette.

Goodness, 44 West 63rd Street, New York. Open 7.00-15.00, 11-14 September.

  1. The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off this weekend, celebrating both Canadian and international talent, just one stop north from the medium’s commercial heartland. Saturday has Canadian features including Breakaway from Robert Lieberman and Carl Bessai’s Sisters & Brothers making their world premieres at the festival. The event, which runs until September 18, is the largest of its kind held in North America, so big international names such as Luc Besson, Francis Ford Coppola and Michael Winterbottom will also be in attendance.

At various locations in Toronto. Until 18 September.
