This weekend check out David LaChapelle’s retrospective at the Fotografiska museum in Stockholm, visit Dallas’s newest museum, and celebrate a great year in music for the XX.

1. EXHIBITION: STOCKHOLM

David LaChapelle: Burning Beauty

Stockholm’s Fotografiska museum hosts David LaChapelle’s largest exhibition to date devoting every inch of the building to the American artist and photographer. The show includes more than 250 of LaChapelle’s photos, music videos and films from the past 25 years. Curated by Patrik Steorn and Min-Jung Jonsson, Burning Beauty offers a glamorous yet sarcastic look at the world of fashion, celebrities and models.

Fotografiska, Stadsgårdsleden 22. Open Sunday to Wednesday 9.00-21.00, Thursday to Saturday 9.00-23:00. Until 3 March.

2. MUSEUM: DALLAS

Perot Museum of Nature and Science

This month marks the opening of architect Thom Mayne’s Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, the latest project in the city’s ever-growing downtown cultural district. The impressive five-story building is home to eleven permanent exhibition halls including a 1,000 sq m fossil repository complete with a towering Tyrannosaurus Rex. There’s also a 298-seat theatre showing nature documentaries and unsurprisingly given its location, an exhibit focused on energy production. The Perot Museum joins recent developments in downtown Dallas built by Rem Koolhaas, Foster + Partners, and Calatrava.

1318 South 2nd Avenue. Open Monday to Saturday, 10.00-17.00, Sunday 12.00-17.00.

3. FILM: NEW YORK

IFC Center: On The Road

To celebrate the release of On The Road, the IFC Center in New York has invited director Walter Salles to present his Kerouac adaptation along with his favourite road films. This weekend’s selection of films includes classics such as Easy Rider and The Searchers. There will also be lesser-known works such as Alice in The Cities – Wim Wenders’ 1974 production about a German photojournalist in search of the real America, and Iracema, which tells the story of a 14-year-old girl who leaves her Amazon village to find out what life is like in the big city of Belém.

Screenings take place between 11.35-22.00 until Thursday. See website for full schedule.

4. EXHIBITION: LONDON

Love in Palimpsests – Memories, Inheritance and Imagination

This weekend the Menier Gallery in Southwark hosts the work of painter Josephine Lyons. Taking inspiration from palimpsests (objects that can be decorated and written on, cleaned and reused but often still bear the impressions of previous uses), her latest exhibition deals with the idea of memory and storytelling in art. The Goldsmiths graduate has created a series of collages using layered text and photographs and paintings. The show also includes the most recent of Lyon’s books – a collaborative effort bringing together her works created other artists.

51 Southwark Street. Open Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday 11.00-18.00. Fridays 11.00-20.00. Until 22 December.

5. MUSIC: EUROPE

The XX

Rounding off a year that has seen the XX prove for a second time – with their sophomore album Coexist – that London is the centre of existentially glum, yet pleasingly progressive indie pop, the band are playing a cluster of dates to celebrate in the UK and Paris. They’ll be hitting London’s Brixton Academy on Sunday before two dates at Paris’s cavernous Le 104 venue (formerly a vast morgue, merry Christmas everyone!) on Tuesday and Wednesday, then back to Brighton UK to finish on Thursday. Success doesn’t slow down for anyone though and the XX have further US dates scheduled for January.

All dates in including 2013 stops can be found on the band’s website.
