EXHIBITION: NEW YORK

Lasting Images

Ranging in media from film to sculpture to installation, the works in the Lasting Images exhibition at New York’s Guggenheim museum use subtly to convey personal and historical narratives. All pieces have been acquired over the past three years and are being shown for the first time in the US. Highlights include Doris Salcedo’s “A Flor de Piel” comprised of hundreds of rose petals sewn together one-by-one – signifying victims of torture, and “Lasting Images” by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige – a three-minute silent Super 8 film shot by Joreige’s uncle who disappeared during the Lebanese Civil War.

The Solomon R Guggenheim Museum. 1071 Fifth Avenue. Until 12 January.

EXHIBITION: TORONTO

Micah Lexier: One, and Two, and More Than Two

Downtown Toronto’s The Power Plant hosts a survey of significant works by Toronto-based artist Micah Lexier. Titled One, and Two, and More Than Two, it follows Lexier’s 30-year career, outlining his personal projects (‘One’), his collaborations with other creatives (‘Two’), while the ‘More Than Two’ section encompasses over 200 new artworks and objects by 101 Toronto artists selected by Lexier himself. It’s a curatorial project that encompasses his own work over time and a view on today’s art community too. Over the past 50 years, Lexier has exhibited at The British Museum in London, Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and AGO in Toronto to name just a few.

The Power Plant, 231 Queens Quay West. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-17.00, Thursday 10.00-20.00, 24 December 10.00-15.00. Until 5 January.

CONCEPTUAL ART: LONDON

Friedrich Kunath: I’m Running Out of World

Friedrich Kunath’s second exhibition in partnership with White Cube Gallery, I’m Running Out of World, sees the LA-based German artist present a world that hovers between consciousness and dreamscape while using slapstick humour, symbolic metaphors and undertones of tragedy. The Bermondsey gallery’s sweeping open spaces are the perfect setting for Kunath’s exhibit, with pieces such as his disarmingly bright ceramic sea otters dipping and rising from the floor of the room. Some are even growing human arms and moustaches – the latter in a direct reference to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

White Cube, 144-152 Bermondsey Street. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-18.00 and Sunday 12.00-18.00. Until 25 January.

SCULPTURE: HONG KONG

Do Ho Suh Specimen Series

Acclaimed London-based Korean artist Do Ho Suh, who is best known for fabric sculptures that recreate his homes and the domestic objects found within them, presents his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong at Lehmann Maupin gallery. Whether it’s a light switch or a refrigerator, Suh believes a physical item’s shape and form can trigger individuals’ memories of spaces they once occupied. While these objects heavily represent Suh’s New York apartment that he occupied from 1997 to 2011, viewers should also use the experience to consider how their own homes have shaped their identity.

Lehmann Maupin, Unit 407, Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central. Open Tuesday to Friday 10.00-19.00 and Saturday 11.00-19.00. Until 25 January 2014.
