When 300-metre-long cargo ship ‘Dali’ struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore a week ago, onboard were items commonly found in US households, from furniture and air conditioners to tins of coconut milk. The vessel’s contents offered a snapshot of how much we rely on our consumer goods to be efficiently transported around the world. What the Baltimore crash also did was highlight how these ever-enlarging vessels are putting infrastructure that was built decades ago under pressure.
